What I put in my grocery cart every week

Last week we talked about what to clean out of your pantry, this week we're going to cover what to fill it back up with! While I try to switch up the foods I eat, there are some staples that I always, always buy and have on hand (which make pulling together healthy meals super quick and easy!).

Here's what I put in my grocery cart every single week:

- Leafy green veggies - spinach, kale, collards, spring mix, romaine, arugula... the list goes on! I like to make sure I have at least one green that is good raw (for salads and smoothies) and one that is good cooked (to add to soups, sautés, etc)

- Snacking veggies - baby carrots, radishes, sugar snap peas, jicama, cherry tomatoes. Either buy pre-washed and chopped, or wash and chop everything on Sunday that way they are easy to grab during the week.

- Sweet veggies - sweet potatoes, squash, pumpkin, onions, beets, carrots, and other root veggies. Sweet vegetables are comforting, satisfying, and help fight off sugar cravings

- Fruit - I always grab bananas and apples, plus something seasonal (citrus, berries, melon). If nothing in season, buy frozen!

- Protein - For me this is usually eggs, tempeh, whole grains and beans, but for you it may also be tofu, fish, poultry, beef or pork. I recommend having at least 2-3 different types of protein to incorporate into your weekly meal plan.

- Healthy fats - I've said it before and I'll say it again: Fat won't make you fat and it's actually a vital part of a healthy diet. Aim for whole food sources of fat: avocado, coconut, olives and olive oil, nuts and seeds, plus many animal products (eggs, fish and meat) also contain healthy fats.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of what I buy, but it does give you a good idea of the types of fruits, veggies, and other food items that I stock up on to make healthy eating easy.

Spring cleaning for your pantry

Spring is officially in the air! I don't know about you, but I've had an overwhelming urge to clean, organize, and de-clutter. I bought The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up and have slowly been making my way through it (and getting rid of lots of stuff in the process!).

Today I'm going to challenge you to take this "spring cleaning" energy into your kitchen and your pantry. Why? Because when you fill your fridge and cabinets with only GOOD stuff, that's what you'll eat, and you will feel lighter, more energized. It's as simple as that.

Here are three things you'll want to clean out ASAP:

1. Sugar AND fake sugar - This is my weakness, and likely yours too. No matter where you "hide" it, it will still be there waiting for you to come home after a long, hard day. Just say goodbye to that leftover Easter candy, packaged cookies, and Splenda. Please, please toss the fake stuff too - it's just as bad, if not worse, than the real thing. Instead try maple syrup, honey, or coconut sugar.

2. Poor quality oils - Canola, vegetable, soybean, margarine, anything partially hydrogenated. These oils are super processed and so your body does not know what to do with them (which means they often get stored as fat!). Replace these with coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil and other cold pressed, unrefined oils (avocado, flaxseed, walnut, pumpkin seed, etc).

3. Sketchy ingredients - Okay, this is a big category, but really why would you want to put anything in your body if you don't know what it is? Ditch or donate anything that has a super long list, hard to pronounce ingredients, or has been sitting on your shelf forever. Just let it go

Once you've purged your pantry, then it's the fun part: SHOPPING! I give you permission to go on a full on shopping spree and fill your shelves with good for you foods and supplements! Check out some of my favorites over here.

Alright, I hear you - overhauling the pantry can be a little overwhelming.
