Loving Lately // January 2017

As a way to share my favorites with you on a regular basis, I created the "Things I'm Loving Lately" series here on the blog. In this series I share everything from food to fitness, brands to beauty products, good reads to good listens. 

 

Here's what I'm currently craving and crushing on:

 

Food: Purple sweet potatoes. Have you ever tried a purple sweet potato?? I'm in LOVE! Aside from being totally beautiful, these spuds have a dryer, denser, and richer taste than regular sweet potatoes. I've been roasting them in a little coconut oil, sea salt + cinnamon and then enjoying as part of my Superhuman Breakfast.  Or eating them like this. Look for purple sweet potatoes at your local health foods store, Whole Foods, or even Trader Joe's!

Drink: My Superpowers Matcha Latte. I've literally had this 29 out of the last 30 days (one day I ran out of coconut milk). It's so good and gives me the perfect amount of fuel and energy to fly through my morning workouts.

Recipe: Some variation of my Cauliflower Rice Bowl. It's a weeknight staple and I've made it for a few friends who were HUGE fans! Do it yourself: Cauliflower Rice Bowl Recipe.

Snack: Rx Bars. OMG! These bars are the bomb.com. They are made with simple, whole food ingredients: nuts, dates and spices, plus have added protein (from egg whites). I like the taste of these bars WAY better than Larabars, plus I find they sit better with me. I find Larabars (and other dried fruit heavy bars) are too sweet and often don't digest well. Book, podcast or blog: It Starts With Food. If you follow me on Instagram you'll know that I did a Whole30 this month. This book is written by the creators of the Whole30 program (side note: I have a blog post coming with WHAT exactly is the Whole30 and my experience) and I thought it was an incredible read and resource whether you are doing a Whole30 or not. This book covers the basics of clean eating AND the psychology of food (which I find SO fascinating!!). This is a good pick for you if you are looking to get motivated to make some changes in your diet and need a little tough love. Order your copy on Amazon here: It Starts With Food.

Essential oil: Lavender. Pretty much everyone's favorite essential oil, I've loved diffusing this at night to wind down, or during the day with a few drops of lemon oil for a calming blend. Learn more about essential oils + where to purchase here: Essential Oils.

Yoga pose: Plow pose! Secret confession: I used to hate this pose! Until I started practicing it regularly and figured out the proper alignment for my body. Now I love it! Which is great because plow is one of the best poses you can do - it improves circulation, boosts your immune system and is super restorative.

Late Summer Recipe Roundup

While summer may be "officially" coming to an end, the delicious fruits (and veggies) of the season will still be with us for a few more weeks. Personally I'm not quite ready for fall yet, so I'm going to keep on eating these foods and pretend that it's still August [and yes, I'm going to keep wearing white too ;) ]

What's in season right now? Apples (just starting!) beans, beets, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, chard, corn, eggplant, all the greens + herbs, grapes (have you ever had fresh grapes?? insanely delicious!), nectarines, onions, peaches, pears, peppers, plums, potatoes, radishes, radicchio, tomatoes, turnips, zucchini and MORE.

Late summer produce is actually one of my favorite times of year because you get the best of both the summer and fall seasons. SCORE! So what to make with all these fruits and veggies? I've got a few yummy ideas for you.

To me, there is nothing more beautiful than the bounty of summer produce exploding in the farmer's markets during this time of year.

What's in season right now? Basil, blackberries, blueberries, cherries, corn (!!), cucumbers, eggplant, all the greens + herbs, melons, nectarines, okra, peaches, peas, peppers, summer squash, tomatoes, zucchini and MORE. Now I'm getting hungry...

So what to make with all these vibrant fruits and veggies? I've rounded up a few delicious recipes featuring this season's bounty:

Spring recipe roundup!

Like I've mentioned before, I LOVE shopping at farmer's markets, so I am super excited that the markets are officially up and running for the season here in NYC.  

What's in season right now? Peas, radishes, greens, asparagus, potatoes, garlic, lettuce, herbs, mushrooms, rhubarb and (drumroll please...) STRAWBERRIES! I've yet to spot the little red gems at my local markets, but I'm keeping a look out!

Now what to make with all this beautiful produce? I've rounded up a few of the freshest, tastiest recipes featuring this season's bounty.

5 Quick + Easy Superbowl Snacks

The Superbowl - it's all about food, booze, and commercials. Not exactly a place for healthy eating, or is it? These 5 quick and easy snacks are super tasty, but won't leave you feeling like a linebacker tomorrow. SCORE! Or should I say, TOUCHDOWN ;)

- Guacamole with radish "chips" - You'd be surprised at how delicious and satisfying guac is when served on these veggie slices. Radishes are crunchy, but have a slightly spicy flavor that pairs perfectly with the creamy avocado dip.

- Cheezy popcorn - Nutritional yeast is packed with vitamins and minerals and gives this popcorn a "cheesy" flavor without any cheese!

- Rosemary roasted nuts - Take your nut mix to the next level! I'd swap brown sugar for coconut sugar (or omit completely) in this recipe.

- Paleo sliders - Who doesn't love a good burger? This recipe is gluten-free and paleo, and totally adaptable for your protein of choice (meat, fish, beans!).

- Chocolate covered dates - Dates are nature's candy and these sweet treats are a total show-stopper. The stuffing and dipping does take some time, so if you are in a rush skip the dipping in chocolate step and serve as-is or top with a small square of dark chocolate.
