Spring cleaning for your gut!

I spent last week in Tulum - an amazing, magical place home to everything from vegan chocolate smoothie bowls to paleo quesadillas, treehouse yoga to ocean front sound healing, fresh coconuts to passion fruit margaritas, all under the radiant Mexican sun.

It was a true retreat in every sense of the word. If you read my last email you know that I took myself off social media for 10 days, which included the 5 days I was in Tulum, and I traveled alone meaning this trip was full of self reflection and serious ME time.

With the warm temps, sun, sand, and lighthearted spirit this trip transported me straight from the dreary ends of winter here in the Northeast to the loving arms of SUMMER. While I was beyond happy to be in the summer vibes, I couldn't help but feel that my body was still back in winter. As I put on my bikinis and shorts for the first time in over 6 months I couldn't help but feel, well, a little fluffy.

 

 

Our bodies naturally hold onto weight during colder seasons, mainly to protect us.

Back in the caveman days, more body fat = more warmth, which means you'd be more likely to survive the harsher season.

Daily Detox Tips

Detoxing is really in these days. Let me let you in on a little secret: you don’t have to go on a 10-day juice cleanse or crash diet to detox, your body already knows how to get rid of crap so that your skin glows, your eyes shine bright, and you feel great.  However, there are decisions you can make every day that help boost your body’s natural detox processes.  

Here are my top 5 daily detox boosters:

Warm water with lemon -  Drink warm water with lemon upon waking. Lemon stimulates the digestive system, boosts metabolism, and helps balance pH levels in the body.

Dry skin brushing - Did you know that the skin is the largest organ in the body?  Gently brushing the skin buffs away dead skin cells so that you GLOW; it also stimulates the lymphatic system and increase blood flow.

Eat your GREENS - Greens give you the biggest bang for your nutritional buck.  They boost energy, keep your digestion on track, and pack tons of micronutrients that your cells need to function at their best. Need some inspiration on how to eat your greens? Head over here.

Twist it out - In a twist, you compress your digestive organs. When you come out of the twist, the organs are flooded with fresh blood and oxygen, stimulating them.

Try adding one or two of these to your daily routine - trust me, it’s much easier than a crazy cleanse, but you’ll still get all the detoxification benefits! 

Fire Up Ginger Tea

The spices in this tea boost your immune system and stimulate your digestion, making it the perfect tea if you're feeling under the weather, or if you feel like you need to flush something out your system.

Fire Up Ginger Tea // vegan, gluten free, refined sugar free

Ingredients:

- water

- 1 inch fresh ginger root, sliced

- 1 tsp cinnamon (or a whole stick)

- 1/2 lemon, sliced

- dash cayenne pepper

- raw local honey (optional, to taste)

Instructions:

1. Add water, ginger, cinnamon, lemon, and cayenne to a medium pot. Bring mixture to a boil, then turn down and let simmer for 10-15 minutes.

2. Taste and add honey if desired. Enjoy hot, or let cool for a spicy iced tea. 

Note: This makes a strong tea so depending on your taste buds you may want to add more water.
