Adventures in Tahoe

Emily's Epic 2016 Adventure has begun! I've said farewell to NYC for a few weeks and am off exploring the west coast for the remainder of the month. In true wellness blogger form, I'm going to be documenting what I'm eating, drinking and doing during these few weeks here on the blog (you can also follow along on Instagram for real-time updates).

And my journey continues north to Lake Tahoe, CA!

LAKE TAHOE

I was only in Tahoe for a weekend, but here are a few highlights of my visit!

EAT / DRINK :

- Healthy beach lunch from Tahoe Central Market at Kings Beach - A perfect beach day lunch spot, this market has made-to-order sandwiches and salads, plus a ton of snacks/grocery items. I got a salad with tons of veggies + a scoop of tuna salad (note: there are not a ton of vegetarian protein options for salads/sandwiches). They also have kombucha on tap from Folk Brewing Co. I tried the Kaffier Coriander flavor and it was super light and refreshing! Finally, I did spy some gluten free baked goods near the deli counter but didn't sample any. #willpower

- Treats at Coffeebar - Coffee house and bakery located in Truckee. All sorts of gluten free treats (and glutinous ones too!). We tried the gluten free blueberry bran muffin (great!) and the lavender latte (WAY too sweet for my liking).

- Groceries from New Moon Naturals - One of my favorite parts of traveling is exploring new health foods stores! New Moon Naturals is a moderately sized place with all sorts of crunchy goodies. They also have a small deli/salad bar and a smoothie/juice bar for fresh eats. Oh and kombucha on tap! ;)

MOVE / DO :

- Hike - Trails are everywhere here! Go check one (or five) out!

- Beach it up - We went to Kings Beach, which is centrally located in North Tahoe and a great spot to spend the day. We didn't end up doing this, but you can rent paddle boards and other water sports equipment here.

- Truckee Community Farmer's Market - A quaint little farmers market where we found fresh squeezed juice, local kombucha, handcrafted chocolates, and so much more!

My cousins just built a beautiful new house here so I can't wait to visit again and explore more! I'm not really a skier, but I do hope to come back and see what the winter season has to offer!

And my journey continues in the city of Angels...

LOS ANGELES // WEEK 3

MOVE

- Restorative yoga at The Yoga Collective Venice - I've been really into a slower yoga practice lately so this Sunday night restorative class was perfect.

- Sweat at Shapehouse - Shapehouse is an "urban sweat lodge" and my experience here deserves a whole post on it's on [coming soon... promise!]. Here's the quick and dirty recap: At Shapehouse you sweat in an infrared sauna bed for 50 minutes while relaxing (either watching TV, listening to music, or just chilling out). To use Shapehouse's words sweating can "burn calories, deepen sleep, improve skin, lift moods and change lives." Like I said, I'm going to do a full post about my experience, what to expect, and more on the WHY, but for now just know that this is one of my favorite new wellness activities!

- Running - Just everywhere.

DRINK

- Rose Girl from Flowerboy Project - Basically steamed almond milk with a subtle rose flavor. Good but I probably wouldn't get it again - I heard the Lavender Boy (lavender infused latte) is what to order here. This space is super cute - some home goods, jewelry, flowers, and of course coffee + bites.

- Green soda from Erewhon market - Coconut kefir (bubbly probiotic drink!) with all the greens (chlorophyll, spirulina, and more!). I liked this - it was pretty intense (you may want to ask them to add extra ice) but made me feel great.

- Muscle Up Smoothie from Earthbar - Pretty standard banana-almond butter-protein smoothie, I swapped in blueberries for some of the banana. I actually grabbed this smoothie at the location inside LAX, great healthy option with smoothies, acai bowls, superfood snacks.

- Charcoal lemonade from Juice Served Here - Activated charcoal is known to pull toxins, heavy metals and other chemicals from the body, making it an easy way to boost your body's natural detox function! This drink also had lots of lemon and a little sugar cane juice so it doesn't taste anything like it looks!

EAT

- Kelp noodles from Erewhon market - I don't know why it's taken me so long to try kelp noodles, they are not a new thing in the healthy eating world. For those of your new to kelp noodles (like me!) they are noodles made from kelp (yep! that's seaweed) and have a mild taste and crunchy texture (more similar to traditional pasta than spaghetti squash or other veggie noodles). Kelp is packed with vitamins and minerals, so these truly are superfood noodles! The kelp noodles I loved from Erewhon had butternut squash, mushrooms, and spinach as well as some spices and I will definitely be re-creating these once I'm back in my own kitchen!

- Cesear salad with shrimp from Greenleaf - If you are in Venice and looking for a quick but not totally casual place for healthy eats and drinks, Greenleaf is it! What I mean is that you can totally come here by yourself and order a salad to go (or to stay!), or you can sit at the bar and have a cocktail with your date, or you can sit out back for a chill night with your bestie. The food is healthy but tasty with lots of options (and not just salads!).

- Green goddess ice cream from Erewhon market - "Ice cream" made from ALL the crunchy superfoods: spirulina, chlorella, barley grass, tocos, maca, hemp seeds, mesquite, lucuma, almond butter, pumpkin oil and cinnamon. This was probably the weirdest and coolest thing I ate in LA!

And there you have it - the highlights from week 3 of my west coast adventure. Stay tuned... Tahoe, SF, and Portland recaps coming soon!!

LOS ANGELES // WEEK 2

MOVE:

- Yoga Nidra at Love Yoga - From Love Yoga: "Yoga Nidra is the practice and art of Yogic Sleep.  In this class you will be guided through a detailed sleep meditation that will allow your mind and body to slip into a deep state of relaxation.  The brain will switch from beta to alpha waves, signaling the transition from activity to meditation.  Receive deep rest and restoration in this extremely healing practice." I had an incredible out-of-body experience during this class and "woke up" feeling clear headed, calm and inspired.

- Run through Pacific Palisades Park - Another fun run along the beach. I did the length of the trail in Santa Monica but I believe this continues down the coast for a while!

- Aerial Yoga at Orange Country Aerial Arts - My first time trying Aerial Yoga! We started with about 45 minutes of stretching and then learned a few moves and a full sequence in the hammock. This was hard!!! But also very lighthearted and a good break from a traditional yoga flow class.

EAT:

- Superfoods Porridge Bar at Live Beaming - This breakfast bar is a collaboration between Live Beaming and my friend Ksenia of Breakfast Criminals. I got the overnight oats with chia jam and not only was it delicious but also SUPER filing. I think I ate it around 9AM and wasn't hungry until 2 or 3PM! Wow!

- Vegan ice cream sundae at Plant Food and Wine - OMG. This was insane!! A modern vegan take on the classic banana split with vanilla hemp, goji strawberry and chocolate maca ice cream, dehydrated banana slices and raw cacao sauce. YUM!!

- Farmer's market EVERYTHING - Avocado, oranges, lemons, arugula, romaine, figs, nectarines!

- Brussels sprouts at Rose Cafe - Topped with a poached egg and submerged in salty dashi broth, these were the best Brussels sprouts I've ever had, and I've had my fair share of the sprouts! Note: The 'hearth' section of Rose Cafe is also a great place to dine alone if you find yourself solo in Venice.

DRINK:

- Golden Milk from Erewhon Market - Silky smooth almond milk with turmeric and other spices.

- Ayurvedic Latte from Cafe Gratitude - A coffee-free latte packed with medicinal mushrooms, almond milk, cinnamon and raw honey. All those superfoods gave me a boost just like a cup of java!

- Coffee at Tom's Flagship Store - The Tom's flagship store in Venice boasts not only a hip coffee bar but also an awesome indoor/outdoor co-working space {I met some cool people there!}. Plus, they provide water to a person in need for all coffee purchases. What's not to love??

PLUS ALL THESE THINGS DURING MY DAY IN ORANGE COUNTY!

And there you have it - the highlights from week 2 of my west coast adventure. Got suggestions for what I should do, eat, or see while I'm out here (LA, SF, Portland)? Leave em below!

What I Ate Wednesday 8/10/16 [Orange County Edition]

In an effort to show you all more of what I eat as a plant-strong, active adult, I'm starting a new series here on the blog - "What I Ate Wednesday."  Every other Wednesday (or so) I'll snap a picture of everything I eat and post the pictures plus descriptions here on the blog.  I'll share helpful information on what I'm eating and why.

PLEASE, please, please do not think that your food choices should directly mirror mine - we are all different and what works for my body may not work for your body, and vice versa.  I'm still figuring out what works best for me and guess what?  It's changing all the time. I'm simply sharing my choices with the hopes to give you more ideas when it comes to healthy foods and meals.

Here's what I ate this Wednesday:

Upon waking - A BIG glass of water. ALWAYS. Then, a mocha from Bulletproof Cafe - delish!! This is my favorite coffee drink I've had from here so far.

Breakfast - Acai bowl with celery, spinach, hemp milk + hemp protein, topped with berries and granola from Banzai Bowls. This was definitely the most epic acai bowl I've ever had! Quick tip: Many smoothie places ADD sweetener to their acai blends because the acai fruit is inherently not as sweet as other fruits. I always ask for no additional sweetener - the toppings add enough sweetness. And speaking of toppings, go easy on em! Granola is delicious but again it can contain tons of added sugar and the amount included is usually way more that 1 serving.  I took off about 1/2 of the granola on this acai bowl before enjoying it.

Lunch - Big ol' kale Caesar salad with tofu, a jackfruit BBQ slider (get my recipe here!) and a guava kombucha from Seabirds Kitchen.

Snack - A green juice with all the greens, lemon, ginger + turmeric from Juice Crafters.

Dinner - So dinner was a little weird since I was driving during usual dinner time. Before my drive I had a Chocolate Collagen Protein bar that I picked up from Bulletproof Cafe earlier. After my drive I had a 'Freeze' from Pressed Juicery which is frozen soft serve like almond milk with yummy toppings. Normal dinner fare? No. Halfway nutritious and delicious? YES.  #balance ;)

And there you have it... an especially adventurous day in my food life! As I've mentioned before, I'm always striving for balance - enjoying food and life, but also sticking with the foods that I know make me feel my best. Do you think you could use some guidance in finding what foods work best for your body and LIFE? Schedule a complementary strategy session with me!
