Green Dream Smoothie

Do you want to try a green smoothie but not sure where to start?  Then this is a smoothie for you! It's green, but it seriously tastes like liquid chocolate chip cookie (in the healthiest way possible).  The perfect treat for a Friday morning!

I served this smoothie at Sunday's Blissful Backyard Yoga Brunch and it was a HUGE hit so I knew I had to share it here.  This smoothie is nutrient-dense, satisfying, and downright delicious.  So do the Friday dance, grab some spinach, and make this treat for yourself ASAP!

Green Dream Smoothie // vegan, gluten-free, refined-sugar free

- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder of choice

- 1/2 frozen banana

- 1.5 TBSP almond butter

- 1 cup of cold water (you can also use almond milk)

- large handful of baby spinach, baby kale, or a tsp of spirulina

- 1 TBSP cacao nibs (you could also use really dark chocolate, but I like cacao because there's no added sugar or other ingredients!)

- dash cinnamon

- dash high quality sea salt (optional)

Add everything to your blender and blend until smooth! You can also throw in some ice cubes if you are like me and love your smoothies super icy.  Top with more cacao nibs or shredded unsweetened coconut!

I hope you all enjoy this recipe!  Let me know in the comments below: have you tried a green smoothie before?  If so, did you like it? What did you use?

Loving Lately - May 2015

Hi there!  I know I promised a recipe yesterday for my Chocolate Avocado Mousse, but I'm still tweaking it (probably just using this as an excuse to "taste test" more).  I promise this delicious treat will be coming your way soon.

As previously mentioned, I’m trying to share more of my favorite products, brands, and foods with you all.  So while I finish up the recipe, I thought I would share some of the things I'm "Loving Lately" with you all!

Here’s what I’m currently craving and crushing on:

  • Raspberries - My dad is a HUGE raspberry fan, but I never really got his love for these sweet-tart berries, until now that is. I can’t get enough of these little rubies! Since they are not quite in season, I buy them frozen (Trader Joe’s) and throw them into chia pudding, blend into a sorbet like treat, or defrost and eat with bananas and a sprinkle of superfood toppings
  • Grilled Asparagus - Asparagus is popping up at all the farmer’s markets here in NYC, and I can’t complain.  Like raspberries, asparagus is something I never really liked as a kid - probably because I never tried it grilled.  Total game-changer.  Simple recipe: Toss with olive oil and a generous sprinkle of sea salt and grill over high heat for 2-3 minutes (so the spears have some grill marks but are still firm and crunchy).  No grill? No problem: Try roasting them.
  • Hu Kitchen Dijon Crunch Crackers - These are not your average crackers - paleo, vegan, and free of sketchy ingredients, they are so much more!  I love the Dijon Crunch flavor - I eat them with guacamole or hummus, or crumbled over one of my beloved lunch bowls.
  • Cacao Nibs - As you may know, I love chocolate.  And as you may or may not know, chocolate CAN be part of a healthy diet - raw cacao is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.  Cacao nibs are little bits of 100% pure chocolate - no sugar, chemicals, or flavorings added.  Think of them like natural, unsweetened chocolate chips. They are slightly bitter, but I love the crunch and chocolate flavor they give to recipes, like my superfood trail mix. Recently I’ve been adding them to overnight oats - YUM!
  • Chocolate Avocado Mousse - As with last month, I’m obsessed with avocados. My newest way to enjoy them?  Blended with cacao powder and ALOHA Daily Goods Chocolate Blend into a decadent, yet super healthy, mousse.  Sorry to tease, but this recipe will be coming soon!
  • DoTerra Essential Oils - Those of you who take my yoga classes know I always offer Eucalyptus oil before class to increase energy and promote deep breathing.  Recently, I've started experimenting with other essential oils in my yoga practice and in my home and absolutely LOVE it.  Interested in learning more?  Join me and fellow health coach Amy Jarosky of Healthy Vices at 8PM on Thursday June 11th for a FREE Essential Oils and Yoga class at Athleta on 18th and 5th.  Can't make it to the event?  Contact me to learn more or to purchase essential oils!

ALOHA May - A Brand New Intention

I seriously can't believe that it's May and that I officially launched my business TWO full months ago!  What a wild, amazing ride it has been so far, and I'm excited to see what the next few months bring.

As I've mentioned before, this year I'm setting monthly intentions.  In case you missed it:

January - I revamped my morning routine.

February - I added in daily meditation.

March - I officially launched my business!

April - I implemented some daily 'Digital Detox' strategies.

Before I introduce my intention for this month, I wanted to chat a little about my experience with "digital detox."   A few things I noticed:  1) I slept SO much better when I disconnected from all technology (phone, computer, TV) at least 30 minutes before bedtime -  I tend to have a "monkey mind" and this sometimes makes it hard for me to fall asleep.  I was much calmer and fell asleep with ease when I had disconnected a while before heading to bed.   2) Turning off push notifications is key -  Without my phone buzzing every time someone liked or commented on a photo or post, I was able to focus on the tasks at hand and check up on social media much less frequently.  3) Out of sight is out of mind -  I need to put my phone in my purse or in a different room if I truly want to disconnect.  If the phone is sitting on the table next to me while I'm at dinner with friends, I will reach for it (just out of habit).  It's very freeing to put technology out of sight and simply enjoy what's going on around you!

While technology will always be a part of my life as a young entrepreneur living the city life, I'm happy to have found some ways to not let it take over.  I'd love to hear your revelations and experiences in the comments below!

With that, let's say hello to May - a brand new month, with a BRAND new intention (pun intended - read on for explanation).

As many of you know, I enjoy cooking.  My favorite possessions are my kitchen appliances.  I totally nerd out listening to lectures on superfoods and love the challenge of making something from scratch.  That being said, most of the time I have other work to do, friends to see, classes to teach, etc, so the truth is I don't cook everything from scratch, or even make every meal for myself.  Often times I rely on store bought items to put together quick, healthy, and tasty meals and snacks.

I know that many of you are the same - you're busy.  Either you like to cook, but don't necessarily have the time, or you are still new to the kitchen and not totally comfortable doing everything yourself.  Cooking for yourself can be awesome, but sometimes there are other things in life you want to do more.  And that's okay!

So my intention for the month is to introduce you to more brands (see pun above) and products that I love and trust.  Through this blog, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, I'll show you the things I buy and how I use them.

The first brand I'm highlighting is ALOHA.

What is ALOHA?  ALOHA has four main products: powdered green juice (the "Daily Good"), plant based protein powder, superfood chocolate, and supplements (be on the look out for more new products soon).  Not only do the products rock, the company is passionate about using only the highest quality ingredients and committed to sustainability.

Why do I LOVE ALOHA?  The Daily Good is one of my travel essentials.  Having this packed in my carry-on assures me that I will be able to get my daily dose of greens, no matter where I go.   Also, while I love a fresh pressed green juice, this is a much more convenient and much more affordable option.  And the superfood chocolate?  Seriously, what's not to love about chocolate that also packs a ton of extra nutrients?

How do I use ALOHA?  When traveling, I mix the Daily Good with water and maybe a little bit of juice and drink as is (I won't lie, its pretty green this way).  The chocolate I eat straight up.  If you want more inspiration on what to make using these products, check out the ALOHA site.

Ready to get your green on?  Use the code WELLNESSWITHEMILY at checkout for 20% off your order!

If there's something specific you all would like to see me cover (brands, products, types of foods, etc), please let me know in the comments below!
