Alright folks, it's officially starting to feel like summer - we had to turn the AC on last night!! I'm not complaining - I LOVE the HEAT (I probably wouldn't teach hot yoga if I didn't...).
A question I get a lot is "What do you think of sports drinks like Gatorade? " Honestly, I don't like most sports drinks because they contain a ton of processed sugar, but I do see the value in drinking them if you are an active person. If you are in the heat for an extended period of time and sweating a lot, its super important to replenish your body properly, and sports drinks can be an easy way to do that.
Datorade is a great option if you are looking for a whole-food way to re-fuel after a hard workout. Made with dates, this drink has tons of natural sugar, plus essential vitamins and minerals. You can flavor it however you like - I added SEA SALT for sodium (important after sweating a lot), MACA for an energy boost, and GINGER for its anti-inflammatory properties. You could also blend in a banana if you'd like a creamier, thicker shake.
DATORADE // vegan, gluten free, raw, refined sugar free
- 8-10 pitted medjool dates
- 1 tsp maca powder (optional)
- 1/2 inch knob of fresh ginger (optional)
- generous pinch of good quality sea salt
- 3 cups filtered water
- 2 cups ice
Add all ingredients to your blender and blend on high until smooth and frothy. Serves 2.
